- martyr. He took orders as a deacon in the
- English church, but fled to Douai, France,
- where in 1571 he recanted Protestantism. In
- 1573 he became a Jesuit in Rome, and in 1580
- was sent to England as a missionary. He was
- betrayed as a spy in 1581, imprisoned in the
- Tower of London, and hanged, drawn, and
- quartered as a traitor. Born in London, he
